Charity – Helping those most in need to keep warm this Christmas

This week, our focus at Portwest is to help those in need this Christmas. With winter 2014 set to be the coldest in 100 years, we have decided to donate new winter-wear to three charities helping in the fight against homelessness. The Fr. Peter McVerry Trust, the Cork Penny Dinners Organisation and Focus Ireland along with its newest charity store ‘Beloved at Focus’ are the three charities we have teamed up with for this special cause. Along with this donation, we are running a special online initiative from Friday, December 12th to Monday, December 15th where we will donate a coat or jacket for any coat or jacket purchased on www.portwest.ie. This is your chance to help 3 great charities and to keep those most in need warm this Christmas.

With recent figures finding there are over 5,000 people in Ireland homeless at any one time, it is important to increase our level of donations to charities this year. Owen Hughes, Managing Director of Portwest says “We’re saddened to hear that homelessness is rising across Ireland. We are passionate about supporting our local community and for many years have donated new clothing to local charities and will continue to do so. This year, we want to help more people across Ireland and ensure that those most in need have warm clothing ahead of what is a difficult time of year.”

The Cork Penny Dinners, the Fr. Peter McVerry Trust and Focus Ireland will receive a donation of clothing valued at over €10,000 which will be distributed to those who use their services. Further to this Focus Ireland’s new charity store ‘Beloved at Focus Ireland’ will sell items from the Portwest’s premium Heritage Collection in their recently opened charity boutique store in Malahide. For the next three months, Portwest will supply a monthly donation of items to the shop and all funds raised go directly to the charity.

According to Ann Marie Connolly of Peter McVerry Trust, “we are delighted to accept this donation for Portwest. The Jackets will provide warmth and much needed cover from the harsh weather to so many who are struggling. At Christmas, it is extra poignant in that they will add a bit of cheer to many. Keeping someone warm is equally as important as putting food in their bellies.”

Please support these charities by visiting our website where we will donate a coat or jacket for any coat or jacket purchased on www.portwest.ie from Friday December 12th to Monday December 15th.

The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year with the hope consumers make the decision to buy Irish when shopping at Christmas.

It is estimated by the Small Firms Association (SFA) that if every adult spent just €10 extra on Irish products the result would be an extra spend of over €30 million on Irish made products during Christmas. Similarly, every €1 spent in a small local store is worth €4 to the local economy while most of the 272,000 retail employees in Ireland work in small local stores. Hughes Family set Guinness World Record for most family members to complete a marathon.

At Monday’s Dublin Marathon, 31 members of the Hughes Family succeeded in their quest to break the Guinness World Record for most members of one family to complete a marathon. The Hughes family first made history thirty years ago when eight brothers ran the course and set the Guinness World Record for most siblings to complete a marathon. While this record set in 1984 has since been surpassed, the Hughes family ensured their re-entry into the Guinness Book of Records when family members of the 13 siblings (8 brothers, 5 sisters) along with three of the original record breakers, traveled from locations throughout Ireland, the United States, United Kingdom, Spain and Germany to run Monday’s race.

Dublin Marathon: Pat, Vincent, Cathal, Richard, Declan, Seamus, Harry and Owen in 1984. Sourced from Irish Mirror.

The Hughes family were inspired to pursue the record after losing a family member to suicide and their marathon run helped raise much needed funds for the Galway based mental health charity On The Road Again (OTRA). OTRA works to help people who have been affected by homelessness, addiction and mental health issues to become sufficient through structured exercise programmes. As well as the obvious benefit to physical and mental health, the positive effects which can come from a regular exercise regime like running promotes positive self esteem and empowers people to take control of their lives.

Members of the Hughes Family 2014.

Well done to the Hughes Family for their setting a Guinness World Record and helping a fantastic charity on the way.
